Kay Family

WHO ARE WE?
Our earliest known ancestor is John Kay, a Yorkshire weaver, born about 1750. He married Mary Collins c. 1775 and they had at least three sons.
Their second son, Charles Samuel Morris Kay, b. 1779, married Mary Conen a descendant of Jacob Conen, a Huguenot from Prussia.
Charles Samuel Morris and Mary had four children: Their eldest son Charles Kay, b. 1805, married Elizabeth Garfield on 24th March 1827 and in 1842 emigrated to Australia. Their second son Samuel Kay, b. 1808, married Elizabeth Donald on 25th September 1836.
Samuel and Elizabeth's fourth child was Charles Kay, b. 1849, who married Mary Ann Oxley on 11th April 1869.
Charles and Mary's second son William Kay, b. 1871, married Ann Caroline Louise Chapman on 18th April 1896. A branch of the Chapman family has been established in Canada (see link to Ann's family). William and Ann had twelve children; their first was born in 1897; their second and sixth child (the last survivors), both died October 2000. William and Ann's children (sixth generation) were:
Alfred William (1897); William John (1898); George Ebenezer (1900); John (1903); Henrietta Florence (1904); Albert Ernest (1906); Alice Marian (1908); Grace (1910); Ernest (1912); Ivy Rose (1914); Henry (1916); Lilian Irene (1918).
Nothing is known of Sarah, Charles Samuel Morris and Mary Conen's third child, apart from the date and place of her baptism (21st March 1813 at St Giles', Cripplegate, London).
Charles Samuel Morris and Mary's fourth child was William Kay, b. 1815, whose descendants still live in England (see link to William's family).

HOW IT BEGAN
A well-attended Kay family get-together in 1986 at Edgware, Middlesex, organised by Sheila Kay and Dorothea Pearce (née Kay, prompted Alan Kay to compile a list of descendants of Samuel Kay (b. 6/3/1808) and Elizabeth Donald of London. At a second reunion six years later, he was able to show how the family had expanded during the previous century.
At the same time Janet Byrnes (née Kay), was researching the Kay family from her home in Australia and was corresponding with Anne Wiltshire, a descendant of Charles Kay and Elizabeth Garfield who settled there in 1842. Anne has provided much information.
For information on Charles's brother William, see link to William Kay (b.1815).
Janet Coatham, a descendant of Mabel Ethel Chapman (who emigrated to Canada), has also provided a lot of information.
Marjorie Robbins, who also descends from the Chapman Family, has contributed greatly to our knowledge.
This website has been built by Alan Kay and his son Nicholas to record what is known of our family's history. Visitors to the site are invited to contact Alan at the following e-mail address for more information:
